Summer Reading is in full swing. Our theme this year, One World, Many Stories has inspired everyone to create some amazing art.

We've created our own countries and designed their flags, drawn maps of our neighborhoods and imagined what it would be like to visit foreign places.

All the artwork is on display in the Rainforest Room so come admire the masterpieces!

The library has also seen lots of visitors at our programs.

Doug Roysdon of the Mock Turtle Marionette Theatre performed several stories with his beautifully carved marionettes and puppets.

Christine Kallevig showed everyone her Storigami, displaying her creations and teaching us how to fold our own.

We've still got lots of programs, storytimes and Bingo coming up in July. And it's not too late to register for the program to win books and prizes just for reading!

The annual Friends of the Lebanon Community Library Book Sale will take place Saturday, May 7th, 9am - 3pm, on the lawn of the library. Responsibilities include handling library accounts, preparing payroll, monitoring annual budget, paying bills, and working closely with the library director on fundraising and other projects. Required: knowledge of accounting principles with an emphasis on fund accounting and non-profit organizations, good people and communication skills, and attention to detail. A knowledge of computer maintenance and Microsoft Exhange and Active Directory is preferred, but not necessary. Bachelor’s degree or Associate’s degree with experience is required. What is TDDP? It's the Telecommunication Device Distribution Program, and you can learn how it can enhance your life at the library on Thursday, Oct. 21st at 9am.

Although it's being promoted as Young Adult literature, the titles really are of interest to a wide range of listeners. For example, this week's titles are The Angel Experiment by James Patterson and Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. The downloads are in mp3 format, and you'll need OverDrive Media Console (available for a free download on this website). Here's to a book-filled summer vacation!

Bookdrop farewell

Maybe the sun reflecting off its shiny silver surface temporarily blinded drivers. Maybe it was the location. Maybe it was the excitement over the treasures so recently checked out that made drivers forget it was right behind them. We don’t know what the problem was, but the bookdrop, previously located in the parking lot of the library, received a few too many bumps from vehicles and has been removed. It had begun to take super-human strength to get the door open to remove the returned materials, so this morning we bid a fond farewell to our shiny silver sentinel of the parking lot. Where will you return your books and movies now? Fear not, faithful library patrons! You can still return your materials through the book drop in the wall of the library (to the left of the doors), or inside at the end of the Circulation Desk.

The library's summer reading programs for kids, teens and adults have officially begun. Stop in anytime to sign up.

Kids ages 3-12 will receive an activity folder. Read, do the activities and come to programs to win free books!

Each week special guests will be visiting the library. They include musicians, storytellers, magicians and lots of live animals! Plus we'll be playing Bingo and creating a giant chalk mural!

The Friends of the Library will hold their annual book sale Saturday, May 1 from 9am to 3pm. Come browse hundreds of gently used books on the lawn of the library, and if hunger strikes while you're sifting through all these treasures, we'll also be selling chicken BBQ sandwiches, chips, and drinks (from 10AM until supplies run out). Bell & Evans is donating the chicken BBQ, a preview of a new product set to launch in the next few months - try it at the library first!

Wow! We last blogged January 21st! Shame on us! Things have been hectic the last few months here, but let's make a springtime resolution to blog more!

The library's annual benefit for the Children's Department has taken up a lot of our time in the last few months. It was held Saturday, April 10th at the Lebanon Country Club and earned the Children's Department $36,000! This money will go toward providing our youngest readers with new books and other materials. Check out our auction site for more details. Many thanks to the businesses and individual community members, auction committee members, board members, staff, and volunteers who all contributed to make this such a success!

Lots of things will be happening at the library in the coming months! This Saturday is the Literacy Festival! Several local agencies have partnered to bring this event to downtown Lebanon. Featured will be children's author visits and booksignings, workshops for parents on promoting literacy for their children, children's activities, storytelling, puppet shows, and much more! Poetry Contest Winners Announced!

The general public is invited to the 11^th Annual Poetry Reading featuring poems written by the winners of the eleventh annual Poetry Contest. Out of the 105 entries received, twenty winning poems and poets were chosen. Winning poets will read their poems following the Family Literacy Festival in the children’s area of the Lebanon Community Library at 2:00 PM on Saturday, April 24, 2010.

The Lebanon Community Library's 11th Annual Poetry Contest

The Lebanon Community Library is pleased to announce the eleventh annual Poetry Contest. The contest will run from January 4 through February 26, 2010 and is open to all ages. There will be twenty winners (ten from each age group – up to eighth grade and ninth grade to adult).

Poetry contest rules are as follows:

All contestants must be living in Lebanon County and must be members of The Lebanon County Library System.
Contestants are limited to two entries and each poem must be no longer than one 8.5” x 11” page.
Each entry should be typed or printed clearly; please do not add illustrations. Place your name on the page with the poem.
Each entry should have an entry form stapled to it.
Entries may be mailed or brought in person to The Lebanon Community Library, 125 North 7th Street, Lebanon, PA 17046, or you can email your entries as Word attachments to volunteers@lclibs.org. If this method is selected please include all the entry form information in the body of the email.
Poems that have been submitted to other contests or those that have already been published will not be accepted as entries.

The library's changing!

There have been a few changes and additions at the library recently. The increased demand for Play-Aways, the electronic audio books, as well as the continued support of the Lebanon Lions Club, has created a need for a bigger display shelf. You’ll now find these popular items near the audio CDs and cassettes.

We’ve also added a lovely seating area in the back of the library for those seeking a quiet place to relax and read-it can get hectic in here! This refreshing oasis, arranged by some of our volunteers, has comfortable chairs and beautiful plants to make you feel right at home.

Check out the reference desk for a selection of holiday themed reading materials, for all ages and interests.

As the holiday season approaches, the Library asks that you consider giving the gift of reading to our community. Staff and volunteers have created the Adopt-A-Book tree, on display at the library entrance. On the tree you’ll find a number of books from our Amazon Wish List. By adopting the book, your purchase allows us to put the item into our collection so that everyone may enjoy it- this really is a gift that keeps on giving! Do you love the sound of a hi-fi's needle making contact with a vinyl LP? Do you find joy in melodies that are brought forth by a turntable? Do you collect and frame album cover art because it's not only cool, but an almost extinct art form?

Well if you answered "Yes" to any of these questions - you should check out our used collection of vinyl LPs (record albums) in the library's lobby - each album is only 25 cents each! While we always seem to have a supply, we have recently aquired many donations so our display is at capacity.

Sure our selection is dominated by the likes of Mitch Miller, and mostly easy listening artists, but if you search long enough you will come up with some gems like the ones pictured here - all for sale in our lobby.

This album reminds me of the Christopher Guest film A Mighty Wind http://amightywindonline.warnerbros.com/ I have been waiting for months for someone to make this record their own and get folksy.

Ah Camelot, personally I never saw the film, but this is pretty typical of the many, many motion picture soundtracks available on vinyl in the lobby. I have been waiting for more rappers and pop stars to sample movie musicals and country artists' work. Has someone already sampled Dolly Parton's Jolene - someone should?

This is a typical album cover that can be found in the lobby almost year round. Perhaps the music doesn't move you (sorry all you waltz fans), but if you're looking for the perfect 50's & 60's artwork this just might work decorate your personal pad or lounge.

Tennesse Ernie Ford in a sharp dressed suit with the "The Star Carol" album, what could be more festive?

A personal favorite because my father has this one. We still play it every year at Christmas time.

For those of you interested in things children might like there's this and I saw Mary Poppins out there too.

I think this might be the most bizarre album in the lobby as far as art goes. Did Tony Bennett steal someone else's clothes to pose for this art piece? It feels very Scooby Doo to me.

Lawrence Welk's show lasted 27 years and is still being played on PBS stations everywhere today. Even though you might not admit it some of your musical memories were probably made with Welk. Book Sale Extended!

The Library's October Book Sale has been extended until Saturday, October 31 at 5pm! And no this is not a trick, it is most definitely a treat. We still have quite a few books remaining and everything must go!

The sale will remain open today from 8-6pm, Friday from 8-5pm and then on Saturday from 8-5pm.

Prices have been slashed and the amazing bargains are: A Box or Bag Full of Books for $5 or 50 cents for each hardback book, 25 cents for each large softcover book, and/or 10 cents for each small paperback book. Please make your payments for this extended sale at the circulation desk @ The Library.

Be sure to check out the sale again or for the very first time! The selection that remains includes mostly fiction titles, some biographies, Spanish languages library discards, religion, diet, fitness, self-help, textbooks, and lots of romance paperbacks.

Some H1N1 basics for your info:

How can you protect yourself from the H1N1 virus?
· Wash your hands frequently.
· Use hand sanitizers before and after using the computer and keyboard. Hand sanitizers are available at the Circulation, Reference, and Computer Center desks. Sanitizing wipes are also available at the Computer Center - please feel free to use them on computer keyboards and mice before and after use!
· Use a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Tissues are also available at the Circulation, Reference, and Computer Center desks.
· Avoid contact with people who have the flu.

Local author Robert C. Vogel will sign books at the Lebanon Community Library Monday, Oct. 19th from 6-8PM. Vogel, a Myerstown resident, is the author of A Way Home and A Way Home II: Resolution. Copies will be for sale at the signing. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the library.

White Cane Day

About 60 people came together at the library today to celebrate White Cane Day to raise awareness of the challenges faced by visually impaired people in our community. The Susquehanna Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired presented their annual white cane award to the Lebanon Lions Club in honor of their support of programs for visually impaired people. The library's circulation director Barbara Neil spoke about her experiences using a white cane and about the many audio resources available at the library. Lebanon Mayor Trish Ward also officially declared today White Cane Day in Lebanon.

Old World Folk Band Draws Crowd

175 attendees enjoyed an informative and fun musical program by The Old World Folk Band last evening at the Beth Israel Synagogue. The band performed Kelzmer and Eastern European folk music which represented the different periods evoked in the One Book, One Community regional recommended read - The People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks. The band also demonstrated and explained how people in disparate cultures and faiths act both simply and heroically to preserve music and the arts over time.

In addition last evening, nationally known calligrapher, Susan Leviton was on hand to demonstrate the art of Hebrew hand-lettering with a special emphasis on the style of Sarajevo Hagaddah, comparing it with Hebrew lettering arts from other geographic regions.

This event was presented by the One Book, One Community Committee, Beth Israel Synagogue and Lebanon County Libraries.

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month @ The Library!

In September 1968, Congress authorized President Lyndon B. Johnson to proclaim National Hispanic Heritage Week, which was observed during the week that included Sept. 15 and Sept. 16. The observance was expanded in 1988 to a monthlong celebration (Sept. 15 – Oct. 15). America celebrates the culture and traditions of those who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico and the Spanish-speaking nations of Central America, South America and the Caribbean.

Nominate Your Librarian via The I Love My Librarian Awards!

This award invites library users to recognize the accomplishments of librarians in public, school, college, community college and university libraries for their efforts to improve the lives of people in their community. Nominations will run through October 9 and are being accepted online at www.ilovelibraries.org/ilovemylibrarian.

Up to 10 librarians will be selected. Each will receive a $5,000 cash award, a plaque and a $500 travel stipend to attend an awards ceremony and reception in New York, hosted by The New York Times in December. In addition, a plaque will be given to each award winner's library.

Each nominee must be a librarian with a master's degree from a program accredited by the ALA in library and information studies or a master's degree with a specialty in school library media from an educational unit accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education. Nominees must be currently working in the United States in a public library, a library at an accredited two- or four-year college or university or at an accredited K-12 school.

Nominees will be judged by a selection committee based on quality of service to library users, demonstrated knowledge of the library and its resources and commitment shown in helping library users.

In Memory of Alice Eck

We lost another dedicated volunteer last week. Another woman who influenced library service and quality of life within our community, her name was Alice Eck.

Alice was our dedicated paperback department coordinator – volunteering @ the library since 1989. Over the years, she gave over 5,000 hours of service to the library, coming in almost everyday of the week. In addition, she recruited other volunteers to keep the paperback section well stocked and orderly.

She loved new paperback donations (of course), but also had a passion for flowers and gardening. She would often bring in some of her “favorites” to brighten up the library. Summer Reading by the Numbers

Number of children signed up for the Kids' SRP: 468.
Number of books given away for their hard work: 975.
Number of Summer Reading Programs: 15.
Number of people who attended SRP Programs: 1850.

Number of teens & adults signed up for the SRP: 277.
Number of teen raffle tickets entered: 140.
Number of adult raffle tickets entered: 341.

So, at three books read per raffle ticket, that means that the teens read 420 books, and adults read 1023 books!

Waldenbooks Fundraiser Success!

Last Saturday Waldenbooks at the Lebanon Valley Mall hosted a Multi Author Book Signing that was also a fundraiser for the Lebanon Community Library. 26 Authors were there and sold in total 181 books generating a donation of $450 in Waldenbook gift cards for the Library!

Thank you to the authors, the staff and customers at Waldenbooks - especially Waldenbooks organizer - Heather Lloyd, and to YOU - the Library patrons and friends for your support this literary event right here in Lebanon!

In the photos above you will see Heather Lloyd presenting Maureen Anderson, the Library's Assistant Director (me) with the $450 in gift cards. We are going to use some of these gift cards to reward our teen & adult summer reading participants. And the rest will purchase popular book titles for the library! Since we haven't been able to purchase new books since our May spending freeze - this is welcome news! And thanks to Waldenbooks for the 25% discount - you are amazing!

You will also see a picture of the Mall sign that was put up in preparation for the event and a panel discussion with Megan Hart, Jeri Smith-Ready, Maria V. Snyder, Mindy Klasky, and Savannah Russe. Finally there is a group shot of Mindy Klasky, Byron Morrison, Savannah Russe, Frank Bittinger, Charlene Haines and Heather Lloyd. In Memoriam

Within the last month the library has lost three very special women. These women have influenced library service and quality of life within our community and we would like to remember their impact here.

Alberta Margin was our dedicated former staff member and volunteer shelver for many years. She could always be counted on to put books back in their proper place. She was also a fiesty cat lover and world traveler. We discovered at her funeral that she and her sister traveled internationally quite often - loving every moment. Phyllis Rich was our dedicated circulation desk volunteer. She spent every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays with us. Phyllis has given the Library over 7,825 hours of service. She was always checking registration cards – over the years she probably sorted, filed and double-checked thousands of cards. She was usually all business, but occasionally a smile crossed her face and when it did - it was magic. Don’t believe everything you hear about librarians being mild mannered! Monday the 20th of July was Tattoo Day for library staff and volunteers. They allowed their creativity to shine through with temporary tattoos expressing their love of all things library. Some of these included Shakespearean quotes, “I Love the Dewey Decimal System”, and a particularly menacing flaming skull reminding all of us of the importance of returning library materials on time.

The Lebanon Community Library was transformed into a French Café on Sunday, April 19, 2009. Tables adorned with miniature Eiffel Towers and water lilies reminiscent of Monet’s Garden, black and white photos of Parisian scenes, and bouquets of hydrangeas transformed the library into a French café. Forty volunteers and library staff spent the afternoon enjoying conversation and the flavors of France; including cheeses, fruit, croissants, salads, and quiches. The luncheon was prepared by the library staff to show appreciation for our devoted volunteers. Special honor was given to Phyllis Rich, who assists patrons at the circulation desk as well as verifies information on thousands of patron registrations. Since February of 1990, Phyllis has given 7,825 hours of service to the Lebanon Community Library. Fred Beaver was also recognized as the volunteer who contributed the most hours of service during 2008. Fred volunteered 787 hours of his time shelving books, cleaning CDs and DVDs, preparing items to be processed, preparing Book Pages, and organizing the library newsletter for mailing. Go Green @ Your Library totes were presented to all volunteers in appreciation for their hours of service. Here are some pictures, and thank you to Karen Stump, our Volunteer Coordinator!

10th Annual Poetry Contest!

The 10th Annual Lebanon Community Library Poetry Contest runs from Feb. 1 through Apr. 17. Submit up to two entries and be among 20 winners (10 up to 8th grade and 10 9th grade and up)! Contestants must live in Lebanon County and be members of the Lebanon County Library System. Winners will be invited to a special 10th anniversary celebration and have their poem bound into a book.

Deadline for entries: April 17, 2009.

The Graveyard Book

The 2009 winner of the Newbery Medal was announced this week. The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman is about a boy named Nobody Owens, Bod for short, who is raised by ghosts in a graveyard after his family is killed.

One of the best things about a Neil Gaiman book is hearing the author himself read it aloud. For the release of The Graveyard Book last fall he toured nine cities and read a chapter aloud in each. Library Closing Sundays & Wednesdays in 2009

The Lebanon Community Library will be closing Sundays and Wednesdays throughout the year starting Sunday, January 4, 2009 and Wednesday January 7, 2009. This decision was made as a result of ending 2008 with a deficit and starting 2009 with reduced revenue and increased costs. The Library’s Board voted on December 17th to close the library on Sunday and Wednesdays as a means of balancing the budget. Additionally two part-time positions had to be eliminated, programs will be reduced and only necessary expenses are approved.

The library will continue to serve the community five days a week with the following hours: Monday & Tuesday 8:30 to 8PM, Thursday, Friday & Saturday 8:30 to 5PM. For additional information please contact Jayne Tremaine, Library Director at 717-273-7624 ext. 208, or tremaine@lclibs.org

Storytime with Santa

The library had a special visitor this morning when Santa Claus visited for some Christmas stories, songs and crafts. He met with all the children who attended and handed out goody bags and free books.

Kids made wreath ornaments for their Christmas trees and also decorated Thank You cards to send to some of the library's patrons who have contributed to make programs like this one possible.

Who doesn’t enjoy giving or receiving gifts? We, at the Lebanon Community Library, believe there are endless resources for gift ideas displayed at the library.
Simply browse our lobby and you will find almost new and gently read past best sellers for sale for $2.00. There are also well loved and well used books and videos priced from $0.10 to a $1.00. But, don’t stop there. Come inside; look for our holiday display of books, music and videos.
Relax in a seat in our browsing section between the video and periodical sections of the library to decide which items would suite your holiday needs, then check them out. You can find dozens of ideas how to create gifts for those closest to you.
Not looking for gift ideas? Perhaps you are interested in the royals of Windsor. Check out the display featuring the royals next to our browsing area.

New Library Patrons Entered to Win a MP3 Player!

September is Library Card Sign-up Month, and the Lebanon County libraries are celebrating in a big way! All month-long the “Get Carded @ Lebanon County Libraries” campaign will actively solicit new library patrons, and each library in the county is offering new registrants a chance to win an MP3 player.

Studies show that children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime learning.

“A library card has always been the most important school supply of all,” says Jayne Tremaine, Lebanon County Library System Administrator. “Kids can come to the library to get homework help and check out books, but they can also check out free music, DVDs and use the Internet. There’s a lot happening at the Lebanon County Libraries.”

A recent study by the American Library Association also showed that families use libraries to spend time together. Forty-four percent of survey respondents report taking their children to the library for this reason.

In addition, Lebanon County library card holders have access to a variety of free online resources, including an online live reference chat, Power Library databases, standardized test resources, World Book Online, downloadable audio books, and a genealogy research tool.

Yesterday Lebanon County Libraries celebrated the beginning of National Library Card Sign-Up Month with a special luncheon at The Lebanon Community Library. Community partners and local politicians helped the libraries celebrate this important month-long campaign.

September is Library Card Sign-up Month and the Lebanon County Libraries have kicked off a month-long campaign entitled “Get Carded @ Lebanon County Libraries!”

One Book, One Community is a regional reading campaign intended to promote the value of reading by recommending a compelling book that links the community in a common conversation. Public libraries in Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry and York counties are all participating in this important program.

Elvis is @ The Library!

Elvis visited the Library this past Monday to deliver a song, a card, and some flowers and birthday wishes to our library volunteer of many years - Pat Hagens. Elvis is being portrayed by another volunteer, Victor Commisso. Thanks Pat & Victor for your dedicated service to the Library!

While Elvis was here he searched for books about the 1960's using our Online Public Access Card Catalog!

And never missing an opportunity to READ he visited his own poster in the stacks.

Summer Concert at the Library

Who said libraries always need to be quiet? This was definitely not the case on Wednesday night at the Lebanon Community Library when two local bands performed on the library's lawn. Letters for Lovers played their upbeat set first. The crowd enjoyed the entertaining lyrics and decided they were certainly worth the wait.

Hostile Enigma's entertaining set brought an energy and entertaining sound that was well received by the crowd gathered on the library's lawn Wednesday night. Their dedication was evident in the face of advancing lightning and thunder.

Books at the Lebanon Library are available for parents and teachers, as well as students. Our parent teacher collection includes a variety of sources on topics ranging from sample lessons for teachers, to "how to books" for the home school parent. "Read aloud" idea books; science, math, art, and music lessons; books of finger plays and activities geared to toddlers are all available for our patrons.

Spring Volunteer Luncheon

Lebanon Community Library volunteers were honored at a spring luncheon on May 9, 2008. Volunteers were introduced and Bill Smeltzer, of the Lebanon Community Library Board of Directors, presented a token of appreciation to each volunteer.

Three of our volunteers , Bobbie Diefenderfer, Phyllis Rich, and Barbara Bross, have each contributed over a thousand hours of volunteer service to the library. They also prepared the lovely luncheon buffet for the event.
